Is their special care or sharpening instructions for the Prismacolor Thick Lead Art Pencils?
Artist coloring pencils have soft, thick leads for easy blending and shading. These much desired
features render certain fragilities to quality coloring pencils. As with any high quality product,
certain precautions must be taken to take full advantage of these features.
The following are recommendations for Care and Sharpening of Prismacolor Artist Coloring
Pencils.
Storage:
High quality coloring pencils are made of wood, a natural product. Wood contracts and expands
depending on humidity. Extreme cold or heat, careless handling or dropping will cause lead
breakage.
Sharpening:
When first getting your colored pencil set, it is best to sharpen all of your pencils and from then
on, keep them sharpened. Since the "leads" are colored pigment in a wax base, care should be
taken and one should not use excessive pressure or "force" when sharpening. Some members of
the Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) suggest keeping your pencils extremely sharp.
Using an electric sharpener quite frequently shaves off only a bit of wood each time (as compared
to letting the pencil get extremely dull and then grinding it down about a half an inch).
Another suggestion is to use an electric sharpener with an auto-stop function initially and then
afterwards, sharpen your pencil manually with a handheld sharpener. We offer a manual
Prismacolor sharpener (item no.24188) for this purpose. Cosmetic sharpeners (the kind used for
pencil eyeliner, for example) can also be effective. If you decide to use a hand sharpener, it is
less stressful on the pencil to hold it vertically in the hand sharpener. Please note that the more
common method of holding it horizontally with a natural wrist action causes stress on the colored
core and thinner wood near the top.
If your pencil splinters when sharpening, evaluate the force you are using, how you are holding
the pencil when sharpening and check that you are using a sharp sharpener. If a particular pencil
is breaking, you may want to try a larger opening sharpener, which can be a little gentler.
Sharpener Cleaning:
Coloring Pencils have soft leads containing wax which will clog the cutting mechanism in rotary
and electric sharpeners. The cutter-heads and blades must be cleaned and lubricated regularly.
The easiest way to clean and lubricate sharpeners is to sharpen a regular soft leaded graphite
pencil (2B or higher). A stiff brush, such as a toothbrush, can also be used. Keep in mind that
the cutter-heads and blades will become dull and clogged with continuous usage and should be
replaced according to the manufacturers' guidelines.

Can I buy direct from Sanford? If not where can I purchase Sanford products?
Sanford is not licensed to sell direct to the end user. Our products can be found at most office supply stores, office super stores, discount, drug, and grocery stores and almost anywhere writing instruments are sold.
What is the difference between BallPoint ink, Rollerball ink and Gel ink?
Ball Point ink is paste ink that is oil based. Ballpoint ink is laid down more sparingly and is not absorbed into the surface. Rollerball ink resembles fountain pen ink. It is a very fluid and smooth writing ink. Depending on the surface it can smear and take longer to dry. Gel ink is a cross between ball point and rollerball ink. It is more fluid than ballpoint ink, but won't smear as much as rollerball ink. Because it is pigmented, bright colors and scents can be formulated into the ink.
Where can I purchase refills for Sanford and Paper Mate pens?
Refills can be found at most office super stores. The best source is through mail order distributors.
Why do the Gellyz pens skip so often?
Gel ink is a new system for the entire writing instrument industry, and it has been a huge trend for us. All companies have experienced trouble reducing the skipping and scratchiness of gel ink and to correct this some companies have switched to a dye base, waterbase ink. Gellyz ink is a pigmented, waterbased ink which allows us to have much brighter colors and a smooth write. Gel retractable pens being capless, have a slightly different ink because of the issues with cap off time and dry out.
The problem of skipping occurs with the passing of ink through smaller pen tips. Sanford has had great success with our Uni-ball Gel Impact, a 1.0mm tip, and we continue to work on the quality of our ink. We do not want to lower the quality of the ink, but instead are trying to work on the formulation combined with the tip. In doing so we have maintained the pigmented base ink because it is the better of the two formulations. This formulation allows the ink to be waterproof, fade resistant and acid free.
Are all of the Gellyz refillable?
The Gellyz Traditional and Florescent colors are refillable as well as the Big Metallic and Big Tropical pens.
How can I purchase Sanford or Paper Mate products imprinted with a message or company logo?
All specialty imprinting is handled by Sanford Business to Business. Click here to access their website or call (800) 356-9466 for more information. For customized pencils please call (800) 800-8858. You can also check your local yellow pages for an ad specialty dealer or for promotional products.
How do you refill the Gellyz?
The silver point unscrews where it meets the barrel. Pull out the cartridge and remove the silver tip (make sure you keep the silver tip). Place the silver tip onto the new refill, slide it back into the barrel and screw the silver tip back onto the barrel.

Paper Mate currently makes two styles of ballpoint refills. What refill fits what pen?
The Paper Mate Lubriglide refill fits all of the Paper Mate ballpoint pens except the Flexgrip ballpoint refills. The Paper Mate Lubriglide refill also fits the Sanford PhD ballpoint and Silhouette ballpoint pens.
What products contain latex?
click here for a listing of products that contain latex.
Are the Gel ink refills interchangeable and will they work in any other Sanford pens?
The Big Metallic and Big Tropical refills are interchangeable with the Gellyz Grip and Stick pens.
Several of the Paper Mate ballpoint pens look as if they are refillable, but they are not (Comfort Mate, Wide Mate, and Silkwriter). How can you tell which pens are refillable?
On the packaging of a Paper Mate pen is an icon printed at the bottom right-hand corner. This icon shows a pen unscrewed in two pieces along with the refill. This means that the item is refillable. If the icon has a red circle with a red line through the middle of the circle, this means that the item is NOT refillable.
What do you recommend for removing stains from Sharpie, Expo, Liquid Paper or other Sanford and Paper Mate products?
Click here for stain removal advice.
Why does the ink in the Big Metallic and the Big Tropical pens run out so fast?
This pen has a 1.0mm point. Most roller ball pens only have a .2mm, .3mm or .5mm point so you are actually laying down 2-3 times more ink. So you will go through ink 2-3 times faster than other roller ball pens.
Why are the Paper Mate ballpoint refills so hard to find in stores?
Because shelf space is limited, most retailers choose to stock the pens over stocking the refills. Since ballpoint refills have a two to three year shelf life, we suggest ordering several at time from mail order distributors.
Why isn't the Sharpie marker available in white?
A white marker requires a pigmented, rather than a dye base ink, to achieve the required opacity. With the ink technology available, we have been unable to manufacture a marker or pen that will uniformly capillary out white ink. In the future, however, as new ink technology develops, it is quite possible we will be able to make a pigmented white ink marker. Until then we suggest trying our white uni-paint paint markers. They are a valve action marker, which requires a pumping action.
Why aren't ballpoint refills available in red or other colors besides black and blue? Also, why are Flexgrip ballpoint pens available in a fine point, but the refills are only available in a medium point?
As mentioned above, shelf space is limited for products at the retail level. Because of this, colors and point size of refills are marketed based on the demand for the product.
What is the difference between Ballpoint ink, Rollerball ink and Gel ink?
Ballpoint ink is paste ink that is oil based. Ballpoint ink is laid down more sparingly and is not absorbed into the surface. Rollerball ink resembles fountain pen ink. It is a very fluid and smooth writing ink. Depending on the surface it can smear and take longer to dry. Gel ink is a cross between ballpoint and rollerball ink. It is more fluid than ballpoint ink, but won't smear as much as rollerball ink. Because it is pigmented, bright colors and scents can be formulated into the ink.
An Expo Dry Erase marker was accidentally used on our projection screen. How can this be removed?
Many Expo users have had success removing ink from projection screens with a product called Re-Markable. This product is distributed by Quartet. Contact their customer service for retail outlets at (800) 541-0094.
Are the Gellyz pens waterproof and fade resistant?
The Gellyz ink is a pigment-based ink, which does make it waterproof and fade resistant.
Can I mix oil paints with acrylics?
We would never recommend mixing oil paints with acrylics. Oil paint requires application to an absorbent surface that has a certain amount of tooth for it to dry properly and develop permanent adherence to that surface. Dry acrylic paint films are not porous, and therefore are not absorbent; they do not have tooth. Painting oils over acrylics is similar to painting them on glass, which is also smooth and non-absorbent. The oil color will initially adhere to it, but as its drying process (polymerization) progresses over a period of years, it will eventually delaminate and lose its bond to the acrylic surface. How long this takes is unpredictable, but it will eventually occur.

An Expo Dry Erase marker was accidentally used on a wet-erase board. Can the markings be removed?
We suggest that you first contact the board manufacturer. Wet-erase boards have a laminated surface, which is usually more porous than dry erase board surfaces. Because of this dry erase ink can sometimes be difficult to remove from wet-erase surfaces and the use of harsh solvents may ruin your board.
Why are the Gellyz pens no longer available in a fine point?
Gel ink is a thicker, waterbased ink that allows us to have a much brighter color with a smooth write. The fine point pens had problems passing this ink through the smaller tips.
How long will it take to let an oil painting dry?
Generally, oil paintings can take anywhere from six months to a year to dry, after which varnish may be safely applied. The drying time changes with the thickness of the paint applied to the canvas and the temperature and/or humidity in your area. Other factors include exposure to light. If wet paintings are stored in a dark closet, they will take longer to dry. (Also, the absence of light will cause the painting to yellow.) Certain pigments have a longer drying time (like the cadmiums and ultramarine). Lastly, the type of oil or painting medium the artist uses to dilute their paint will impact drying time.
What is the charge to repair my pen?
Beyond a basic $10 shipping and handling fee, repair costs depend on the
nature of the damage. If the repair is associated with a manufacturing defect, there is no
charge for any necessary replacement parts. For other repairs, the cost of parts will be added
to the $10 shipping and handling fee. All costs must be covered prior to the repair work being
undertaken. For your convenience, we accept payment in the form of personal checks, money orders,
Master Card, or Visa.
Why does a blob of ink form at the tip of the Eraser Mate pens in between uses?
Erasable ink is a thick substance and contains latex for it to be erasable. In order to provide a smooth write, a mineral spirits type substance is added to the ink. This is what accumulates at the tip when the pen is not in use. Simply wipe the blob away with a tissue and the pen will perform fine. The new Eraser.Max pen contains a pressurized erasable ink and will not glob at the tip when the is not in use.
What is the white wax that comes to the surface of pieces drawn with the Prismacolor Thick Lead Art Pencils and how do I get rid of it?
This is called "blooming" and it can be prevented by spraying your finished piece with an acrylic matte fixative.
There seems to be several different styles of Sharpie markers. Is the ink the same in all of the different styles?
The black ink in the Fine, Twin Tip, Liquid Tip, and Super is overhead projector ink. The principle solvents are alcohols, but contains ethylene glycol monobutyl ether All other Sharpie ink colors are Permchrome ink. The principle solvents are alcohols, but no glycol ethers are used.

Does Sanford do any testing on animals?
Sanford products are not tested on animals. Because our products require the use of dyes and pigments, some products do contain animal by-products. These products include the Foam Rubber Ink Pads (pre-inked), Mr. Sketch Washable Markers, Roll on Stamp Pad Inker, Liquid Accent Markers, King Size/Deluxe Markers, Sharpie Markers, T.E.C markers and China Markers.
Which highlighters will show up when faxed or copied?
Sensitivity of copy and fax machine's can vary greatly. If you do not want the highlighter to reproduce a grayed-out outline, we suggest setting your copier on the lightest setting and try a dye base highlighter, such as Major Accent, Pocket Accent or Aroma Accent in yellow or light blue. If you want highlighted text to reproduce in gray when copied or faxed, we suggest using the darker colors of a pigment-based highlighter, such as our Liquid Accent and Text Accent.
What type of surfaces are dry erase markers made for?
Expo markers are intended to be used on non-porous surfaces. Sanford dry erase markers are tested on Melamine, Polypropylene, and Porcelainized Enamel surfaces. If using on any other type of surface, we suggest testing it in an inconspicuous area first.

No one seems to carry the Power Point and Jumbo ink ballpoint refills. Are they still being manufactured?
Both of these refills were discontinued a few years ago. The suggested replacement is the Paper Mate Lubriglide refill.
How do I store, clean, and maintain a fountain pen?
Store the fountain pen upright:
The nib should be point up when not in use. The ink will then drain down into the converter or refill which will eliminate drying or clogging of the nib.
Clean the fountain pen in between each refill:
- After removing the cartridge or converter, flush the nib and gripping section with cool water.
- Lightly blow air through it afterwards to clear all liquid out of nib.
- Dry or blot the nib and gripping section with a soft cloth or paper towel.
- A converter that is not being used for ink can be used to flush the nib and gripping section by drawing cool water up through the nib and forcing the water out. Repeat this several times, then dry the nib and gripping section with a soft cloth or paper towel.
Soak a clogged fountain pen in cool water:
- If a pen clogs, place the nib and gripping section in a cup of cool water.
- Let the nib and gripping section soak up to 24 hours.
- Parker/Waterman ink is water-soluble and will dissolve in water.
Use only the same brand of ink as the brand of fountain pen:
Each ink is created to work best with the mechanism of the same brand of fountain pen.
Where can individual colors be purchased?
Individual colors can be found at most art and craft stores and quantities of a dozen or more can be ordered through mail order distributors.
Why does the Sharpie say "Not for letter writing or cloth"?
Sanford does not recommend the Sharpie for letter writing as it is a solvent base ink and will soak through paper. Sanford does not recommend the Sharpie for use on cloth as it may fade or bleed in the wash. Also, over time a yellow halo may appear around the marking.
I have some acrylic Accent paint with Sanford's company information on the label, but I don't see any reference to the paint on the website.
Shortly after Sanford acquired Koh-I-Noor in 1999, which included the Grumbacher, Accent paint and rOtring lines, the Accent paint line was sold to a company called Gem Craft in Florida. Unfortunately, since that time Gem Craft has gone out of business and there is no way to reach them.

What is the difference between a dry erase and wet erase marker?
Expo markers are intended to be used on non-porous surfaces, such as Melamine, Polypropylene, and Porcelainized Enamel surfaces. Wet-Erase markers contain water-soluble dyes and are intended for acetate, film or laminated surfaces. Wet-Erase markers can only be remove with a damp tissue.
What does each point size mean?
Medium = .7mm Impact = 1.0mm
In the Uniball rollerball line Micro = .2mm Fine = .3mm
What does the little safety symbol on the back of the paint tube mean and why is it there?
Grumbacher cares about our consumers and the safety seal on the back of the tube states that our product conforms to ASTM (The American Society for Testing and Materials) standards and is your assurance that the product is properly labeled for health hazards.
ASTM is an association of industry representatives and other interested parties who formulate voluntary standards for quality and safety. ASTM D4236 is the name of the standard for health and safety labeling of art materials. This standard was made mandatory by the 1990 Federal Labeling of Hazardous Art Materials Act. It requires manufacturers to have their product evaluated by a toxicologist for potential health hazards and to follow his or her labeling recommendations. The statement on the back of the paint tube "conforms to ASTM D4236" is your assurance that the product is properly labeled for health hazards.
Recently, there is new labeling which is part of the state of California's Proposition 65. The labeling warnings comply with the state of California's Prop 65, but these paints are considered "non-toxic" in every other state. If an artist uses safe studio practices (washing hands before eating, not eating in your studio, etc.), all should be fine.
Why was the Liquid Paper Thinner discontinued?
The Liquid Paper Thinner was discontinued in 1984 due to the fact that the United States EPA was restricting it because it was a factor in ozone depletion and a health hazard.
Although one bottle may not have been harmful to the environment or a single person, Liquid Paper Thinner was not made one bottle at a time. In the manufacturing process large amounts were created and the manufacturing of 500 gallons at once was dangerous to the environment as well as to the employees making it.
Our current Liquid Paper Correction Fluids have been reformulated and no longer need or use a thinner.
Is fountain pen ink permanent?
For Parker pens, inks come in both washable and permanent varieties -
we offer one washable blue ink, while the rest are permanent. For Waterman, all ink varieties are
permanent. Every ink we produce - for both Parker and Waterman products - is water-based.
Important note: Drawing or India inks should not be used in any of our fountain pens.
Which fountain pens have an 18K gold nib?
Parker Duofold, Sonnet, and Ellipse fountain pens have an 18k gold nib
What is the best way to sharpen Prismacolor Thick Lead Art Pencils?
The blade in small hand-held sharpeners often dulls very quickly and will then chip the wood and break the lead.
When sharpening colored pencils we recommend a steel hand-held cosmetic sharpener. Cosmetic sharpeners
can be found at department store cosmetic counters such as Estee Lauder or Lancome. We have also found that the
ones made in Germany are the best.
If you are unable to find a German made steel hand-held sharpener, our next recommendation is the Sanford
Dexter hand crank sharpener. Please note that the lead in colored lead pencils is softer and most of them contain wax,
which can clog the cutting mechanism. The cutterblades and cutterheads of hand crank and electric sharpeners
should be cleaned regularly, especially if a lot of colored pencils are being sharpened at the one time.
Sharpening a black lead graphite pencil will also help to clean the cutterheads from wax buildup.
How many colors do the Sharpie markers come in?
The Fine point is available in 12 colors, the Ultra Fine is available in 8 colors and the Extra Fine, Twin Tip, Liquid Sharpie, and Super Sharpie are available in 4 colors.

How can I buy just one individual color?
Based on demand, fluorescent yellow and pink are more popular so these colors are usually the only colors available in single packs. Other colors may be available through mail order distributors and stationery stores.
Can the odor from the regular Expo cause harm?
Sanford's Expo Dry Erase Markers are safe to use for their intended purpose. They have been manufactured and packaged to comply with all government rules and regulations, including the Federal Hazardous Substance Act Regulations of the Consumer Product Safety Commission and that of the American Society of Testing Materials known as ASTM-D4236. The words, "non toxic - conforms to ASTM-D4236" are incorporated in the graphics for the barrels and packaging of these markers.
Expo Markers contain approximately 50% ketone solvents and 25% ester solvents. If the concentration of vapors from these solvents is less than a Threshold Limit Value (TLV) of 50 parts per million, no adverse effects are expected. This is predicted on the basis of figures published for the ketones by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. The TLV is even higher for other solvents in the ink.
It is very difficult to obtain this vapor concentration of 50 ppm through normal usage of the markers. Severe tests conducted in a closed, unventilated room, measuring 15 feet by 15 feet by 8 feet, with Expo Markers under constant use, showed that the user would be exposed to a concentration of ketone vapors of only 1 to 2 parts per million. Therefore, the user would have to be exposed to a concentration of vapors 25 to 50 times greater to reach the Threshold Limit Value of 50 parts per million.
Overexposure or allergic reactions could result in irritation of the eyes, nose and throat. These symptoms are readily reversible after end of exposure and with fresh air. Some people are more sensitive and more prone to allergic reactions; if symptoms appear, the person should be moved to fresh air.
Why are the Gellyz ink cartridges only filled 3/4 full?
The space in the ink cartridge is to allow for expansion of the ink due to heat when shipping.
Why have so many brushes been discontinued and how do I know which ones are still available?
Today our line offers brushes to meet the need of the fine art painter working in oils, acrylics or watercolors. We no longer offer brushes in the non-fine art category including craft and decorative brushes, lettering and sign painting brushes, faux finishing brushes and utility brushes.
Why does Liquid Paper seem to get thick so quickly?
Correction fluid tends to thicken after exposure to air due to the nature of its composition. For this reason, it is important to keep the bottle capped when not in use. Tests relating to long-term storage have shown that Liquid Paper will remain stable for at least a year if properly stored. Of course, once the bottle has been opened and its contents exposed to air, the drying-up process is accelerated. We always advise retailers to rotate their stock, so that the older product will be sold well before it has reached the end of its shelf life. Still, it is possible that you received a bottle of old product that had been overlooked.
How do I fill my mechanical pencil, and how many leads will my pencil hold?
To refill your pencil, all you have to do is remove the eraser and insert the leads in the tube. Each of our pencils works on a continuous-feed basis. With the exception of rotring - which holds 3 lead refills - all of our pencils can accommodate 6 leads.
What are the point sizes for the Parker mechanical pencils?
All are .5mm except for the Parker Duofold which is a .7mm.
I have the 120 count set of the Prismacolor Thick Lead Art Pencils and am in need of a new box?
New boxes are available for the 120 count sets only. Please mail a check or money order for $8.00 to Sanford Consumer Affairs, 2711 Washington Blvd., Bellwood, IL 60104.
Where can I purchase Sharpie markers in colors other than red, blue, green and black?
Check the office super store mail order catalogs.
It seems that roller ball type pens have a tendency to leak while in flight or at high altitudes. Why is this?
Roller ball pens have a thinner ink then typical ballpoints. This type of ink provides a smoother, more consistent write, much like a fountain pen. The problem of leaking occurs when consumers have a newer pen and take it to an extreme air pressure (such as in a plane). If using roller ball type pens in high altitudes, equalize the pressure by taking the cap off with the tip facing upwards. This allows air into the chamber without pushing the ink out of the tip. We also recommend our newest product, the uni-ball Elite which is an airplane safe pen.
Which fountain pens have an 18K gold nib?
Waterman Edson, Serenite, L'Etalon, Liaison, Carene, Charleston, and Preface have 18k gold nibs.
Where can rOtring refills and pens be purchased?
The rOtring line is available through most fine pen stationery stores and through fine pen mail order catalogs. Select pens may be available at office supply super stores. Click here to search for a store.
I purchased a pen/marker that stated it was waterproof, but when water came in contact to the writing the ink smeared.
The definition of waterproof in the writing industry is that as long as the writing is still legible after contact with water, than it is waterproof.
I highlight text on memos and post on a bulletin board, and within a short time the color fades from the paper?
Dye base highlighters will fade faster than pigment base highlighters. Especially when exposed to direct sunlight or florescent light.
What differentiates a "washable" marker from a "watercolor" marker?
The term "watercolor" does not mean washable. It simply refers to the vibrant lay down of color on paper. For a product to be washable it must contain water-soluble dyes. If a marker is washable, it will clearly be stated on the packaging.
What is the difference between Expo and Expo 2?
The solvents in the Expo Markers are similar to those found in fingernail polish remover; the main solvent is MIBK (methyl isobutyl ketone). These markers do not require warning labels for toxicity by the Consumer Product Safety Commission; the inks have been tested and meet the non-toxic standards found in the Federal Hazardous Substance Labeling Act.
Our Expo 2 Low Odor Dry Erase Markers contain an alcohol based ink. They still have an odor, but not as strong as the regular Expo.
What is the point size for Waterman mechanical pencils?
Waterman mechanical pencils have a .5mm point size.
Why does excess gel accumulate at the tip before and after writing?
Gel ink is thinner than traditional ball point ink. When left uncapped or in a point down position it is not unusual for ink to seep out and accumulate at the tip.
When can I varnish my oil painting done with conventional oils (Academy or Pre-Tested oils)? Does this change when I use your MAX/MAX2 line?
Before varnishing, the artist must wait 6 months for a thinly painted oil painting and twelve months for a more thickly painted pieces. Oils dry by the polymerization of their oil content and it takes that period of time to change to a dried paint film. Polymerization is when the oil content absorbs oxygen from the air and reacts chemically with it to form a different substance that is the dried paint film. The same time guideline is true for paintings done by our water miscible line, MAX. MAX is a genuine oil paint and dries the same way that conventional oil paint does. Oil paint (both MAX and conventional oil) dries from the outside in and no matter how dry the surface feels to the touch. As stated above, it takes 6 months for a thinly painted piece to dry and 12 months for a more thickly painted piece.
How do you read the date code on Liquid Paper products?
On the neck of the bottle is a series of letters and numbers. Waterbase products will have five digits and solvent base products will have six digits. The 1st digit signifies what type of correction fluid it is, the 2nd digit signifies the year it was manufactured, the 3rd, 4th & 5th digits signify the day it was manufactured and the 6th digit (if applicable), signifies that it is a solvent base product.
Can I get a different size nib for my fountain pen?

What makes a marker permanent?
A permanent marker is considered permanent for different reasons: such as
1. The markings resist fading from light exposure.
2. The markings are waterproof.
3. The markings have resistance to various solvents.
A combination of ingredients is what gives ink these permanent properties.
1. Dyes or pigments - these are what give the ink color (colorants) - these determine how well
a marking will resist fading.
2. Resins or surfactants - these are what give the ink the ability to adhere to various surfaces.
3. Solvents - these mix all of the ingredients together, or dissolve them, to form the ink - like a
cake batter! The solvents determine the solvent resistance of the markings.
The Liquid Accent (Pen Style) highlighters do not seem to last long. Why is this?
The pen style Liquid Accent highlighters actually contain the same amount of ink as the Pocket Accent highlighters. In fact you actually get a longer write out because every bit of ink is used due to the Liquid Accent having a "free ink" system. The ink in traditional highlighters is contained by a fiber reservoir. The absorbency of the writing surface also affects the amount of ink that is drawn out of the highlighter.

If Expo markers are dry erase, why aren't they washable?
Dry erase ink contains release agents, which keep the pigments from sticking to the dry erase boards and non-porous surfaces, and turn the ink into a powder form when dry.
Why do the Gellyz ink cartridges seem to form air pockets?
The air pockets may be a result from shipping or they may be past their shelf life of two years.
What is the difference between MAX and MAX 2?
MAX is professional grade oil color that is water miscible. It is made with pure and permanent pigments to maximize color strength. MAX 2 is our student grade of water miscible oil color. It has the same water miscible qualities that MAX has but it is specially formulated to offer optimum color strength at a lesser cost. In order to make MAX 2 less expensive most of the colors contain inert pigments called extenders. Because of this they do not have quite the tinting strength of the MAX colors, or in other words you have to add more paint for tinting. This is true for all student grade lines. Also, some of the more expensive pigments (like the Cadmium's and Cobalt's) may be replaced with modern pigments that replicate the masstones and tints of the original pigments. These are labeled as hues.

Gel ink is water base ink. Waterbase ink dries by absorption, which means if the pens are used on a slick or glossy surface it will take longer for the ink to dry.
What is the advantage of using Grumbacher's MAX or MAX 2 oils over conventional oils?
The main advantage of using MAX (the professional line) and MAX 2 (the student grade line) of oil colors over conventional oil colors is their water miscibility. This means that when an artist uses the MAX line, they use water as their diluent and solvent. This allows the artist to paint indoors without exposure to the fumes from turpentine or petroleum solvents they would have to use with conventional oils. When using water miscible MAX, the artist dilutes with water and cleans their brushes with water. Another advantage MAX has is they are completely compatible with conventional artist's colors, painting mediums and solvents. Mixtures of the two will dilute with water as long as it is in an approximate ratio of 30% conventional oil materials to 70% MAX. The MAX line is ideal for artists who are sensitive to conventional solvents and for painting in environments where conventional solvents are not allowed.

Is the Sharpie marker safe for writing on CD's?
Sanford has used Sharpie Markers on CDs for years and we have never experienced a problem. We do not believe that the Sharpie ink can affect these CDs, however we have not performed any long-term laboratory testing to verify this. We have spoken to many major CD manufacturers about this issue. They use the Sharpie Markers on CDs internally as well, and do not believe that the Sharpie Ink will cause any harm to their products.
Every roller ball type pen I use seems to skip after a short time of use. Could this have anything to do with me being left-handed? Also, because I am left-handed and my hand drags over what I have written, I have noticed that the ink smears easily.
Right-handers "pull" a pen across the page where as left-handers tend to "push" the pen across a writing surface. The angle that a roller ball pen is held plays a big part on its writing performance.
Roller ball ink does take slightly longer to dry then traditional ballpoint pen ink especially on glossy surfaces. This is because roller ball ink is thinner, similar to fountain pen ink. Ballpoint pens and porous point pens are the best choice for left handed people.
